Numbers Game
The invoice comes in the mail or as a fax. It looks real and contains information listed on most invoices -- names, amounts, and purchase order numbers. The invoice is usually for a small amount, one that won't raise eyebrows. It is for a product that you use in your business and therefore represents a logical purchase. The swindler is betting that the bill will be inadvertently paid along with routine bills.Crooks mail out thousands of bogus invoices and hope that a percentage will be paid. They are playing a numbers game. They gamble that the more invoices they mail, the better the chances that someone will pay.
