Mythology Lesson
When he returned from the island of Crete, Hercules was sent by Eurystheus into Thraciam with the cause of the returning the horses of Diomedes. These horses were devouring the men’s flesh; Diomedes on the other hand, a man as cruel as can be, were throwing all travelers who were coming into his region. Hercules then stretched by great swiftness Thracia, and he requested from Diomedes: “Return your horses to me.” The King refused to be brought about by this, and Hercules, since he had been disturbed by anger, did away with him, yet he ordered the dead body to the horses. Since this had been announced, all who were dwelling in the region were praising with the greatest gaiety, and drove to Hercules great thanks. Not only respect and gifts were offered to him, but also they were announcing: “You undertake our kingdom.” That man however did not wish to do this, and he ascended the ship progressing to sea. When all were prepared to sail, he placed the horses in the ship; next, having been obtained in the suitable weather, he sailed without delay from the port, and after a little while he exposed the horses onto the Argolic shore.
